Lately I've found when something feels like a departure, it's actually more connected than it seems.
I'm not sure we can ever really do a full 180. There are events and thought processes that are vital to who we are, that lead us where we go. I don't think there's any escaping that.
This piece feels like a departure from a lot of my previous work. But when I think back, I've developed what I've come to call a crosshatching technique, for a while.
This may just be the densest weave and most wild iteration of a continued idea.
Each piece has to fit pretty precisely, so I'm using my angle grinder with a cutting blade and my belt sander more than I have for any previous project.
It's a lot of back and forth, drawing little lines with soapstone, cutting to spec, and then adjusting, removing a little length, or angling the ends so they fit just right.
There's definitely a balance between the planned idea I'm executing on while leaving room for randomness and spontaneity. I'm still focused on composition and balance, but there's a freedom in the unknown of figuring while you go.
As I'm playing, new and different ideas keep sparking, ones I'll be excited to play with ten years from now, when I finally finish this piece.
